Can the Opposition Unseat President Tinubu in 2027?

Can the Opposition Unseat President Tinubu in 2027?

Presently Nigeria is standing at a very crucial moment in the nation’s development trajectory which requires all hands to be on deck.

As the 2027 general elections approaches, the opposition political parties and key actors need to build a coalition, consolidate their energies, resources and skills for the work ahead.

There is no doubt; it will be a daunting task uniting to challenge the ruling party's potential candidate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is a doable task, but it all depends on how ready and prepared the oppositions are.

The stakes are high, and the path to victory may look narrow, but it is not insurmountable. The question remains whether it is possible for the opposition to spring a surprise and snatch victory from the ruling party and the incumbent? What is the pathway towards achieving this onerous task that will further deepen Nigeria’s democratic credentials like it happened in 2015, when the nation achieved transition from one party to another party?

The answer lies in thinking outside the box. Instead of recycling familiar faces, the opposition should consider a Dark Horse – a seasoned technocrat with integrity, global economic expertise, with a deep understanding of Nigeria's oil and gas sector - the main stream of Nigeria’s economy and who can harness the abundant mineral resources in the country for the economic benefit of the Nigerian people. Someone who can inspire confidence and offer a fresh perspective on the country's challenges, as well as the pathways to the New Nigeria that ensures ‘Nigeria Works for the Nigerian People’, not for a few elite and their cronies.

The candidate should be a Nigerian that cares for all and sundry, big and small, an inclusive Nigerian that will deliver equity and shared prosperity for the people of Nigeria. Variables for determining political leadership should not remain the same, Nigerians should look beyond political parties and emphasise more on the quality and character of the candidate.

The essential qualities expected from whoever should take up the mantle of leadership of the country in the forthcoming 2027 Presidential Election will be hinged on the candidates Integrity, Credibility, Intellectual Ability and In-depth knowledge on how he intends to take the country to the land of our dream.

A detribalized candidate should be a strategic choice, given the current regional dynamics of Nigerian politics. This citizen should be a Servant Leader whose vision is to be a unifying figure, acceptable to all factions within the opposition and larger society.

Personal ambition should be relegated to the background towards achieving this onerous task by the opposition political parties. Patriotism should be the watchword for the candidate, standing shoulder high in integrity, commitment to the people, and record of service to the nation.

The unity of the opposition should be paramount; they should close ranks, put their various differences aside, and present a formidable front against the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.

A well-chosen candidate, backed by a united opposition, could indeed spring a surprise and give the incumbent President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a run for his money.

The ball is now left in the court of the opposition to rise up to the occasion. Time is ticking. History Beckons. The future is in our hands. Time to act through unity is now.
